Counselling Services supports the personal, academic and social development of students through a range of programs and services that aim to meet student needs. These include one-on-one appointments, skills and therapy groups, online wellness resource and a range of mental health resources.

Once you are working with a counselor, they will work collaboratively with you to develop an individualized care plan, which may include additional pre-booked sessions with the same counselor, as well as referrals to skills or therapy groups, mental health resources, and/or other campus services and programs.

Development Delay

A developmental delay is when a child takes longer to reach developmental milestones than other children. It can be a delay in reaching language, thinking, and motor skills. There are five main areas of development in which kids can have delays. They are-

  • Physical development (fine and gross motor skills)
  • Cognitive development (thinking skills)
  • Communication development (speech and language skills)
  • Social and emotional development (emotional control, social skills)
  • Adaptive development (self-care skills)

If your child is developmentally delayed, the sooner you can diagnose, the better it will be for your child’s development into adulthood.

Treatments for developmental delays vary according to the specific delay. Some treatments include speech-language therapy, physical therapy, behavioral and educational therapy and social skills training.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity-

Hyperactivity means having increased movement, impulsive actions, and a shorter attention span, and being easily distracted. A Hyperactivity person is constantly being active in ways that aren’t appropriate for the time or setting. The hallmark condition associated with hyperactivity and difficulty concentrating is attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

Typical behaviour may include-

  • Fidgeting or constant motion
  • Do not seem to listen
  • Have trouble playing quietly
  • Often talk excessively
  • Interrupt or intrude on others
  • Are easily distracted
  • Do not finish tasks

While there is no cure for ADHD, Treatments include medication, psychotherapy, education or training, or a combination of treatments. We have a team of highly professionals to take care of all the issues related to hyperactivity and inattention.

Behavioral Problems

Problem behaviors are those that aren’t considered typically acceptable. Such behavior can range from the absence of emotions to aggressive emotions. Typically, behavior problems are those which are unwanted and maladaptive.

For example, depression, anger issues, panic disorders, addictions, anxiety, phobias and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).

Learning Disability

A learning disability is not an intellectual disability. A learning disability is a disability that affects a person’s ability to process information. People with learning disabilities possess an average to above-average IQ.

Since difficulties with reading, writing and/or math are recognizable problems during the school years, the signs and symptoms of learning disabilities are most often diagnosed during that time. Types of Learning disabilities are dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, dyspraxia, ADHD, auditory processing disorder, visual processing disorder, memory, retention.

A learning disability cannot be cured or fixed; it is a lifelong challenge. However, our team of experienced counselors and special educators can provide you with appropriate support and intervention to help students achieve success in school, If you have a learning problem, it doesn't mean you can't learn. Social-emotional problems are related to the child’s ability to understand the feelings of others, control their own feelings and behaviors, and get along with peers. Children with these problems fail to attain the basic skills they need such as cooperation, following directions, demonstrating self-control and paying attention, Feelings of trust, confidence, pride, friendship, affection and humor.

As a result these issues can lead to serious consequences such as social isolation,stress, issues with peers, perfectionism, concerns with identity and fit, disproportionate disciplinary rates and an increased likelihood of skipping school, dropping out and becoming involved with the criminal justice system.

Career counselling is used to support an individual with choosing, changing, or leaving a career. It can be done at any stage in life. It is particularly useful when done for students in school or colleges, as it will help in selecting the right stream. Career counselling includes career exploration, making career choices, managing career changes, lifelong career development and dealing with other career related issues.

Assessment tools used in career counseling to help clients make realistic career decisions are interest inventories, personality inventories, and aptitude tests.
